WEST VALLEY CITY — A helmet may have saved the life of a West Valley motorcycle officer involved in a head-on collision Friday morning.

The officer was attempting to make a routine traffic stop in the area of 3200 West and 3600 South, said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt. His red and blue lights were on as he tried to catch up with the car he was pulling over, when another driver tried to make an illegal left turn right in front of him, Merritt said.

The officer ended up being sideswiped and pushed into oncoming traffic, where he hit a third vehicle head-on, he said.

"He has good road rash on his arm," Merritt said. "There was a big chunk taken out of his helmet."

The officer was taken to the hospital and later released. The motorcycle incurred significant damage.
