A car chase and an all-night search involving multiple agencies in the Salt Lake Valley lead to the arrests of four people late Sunday and early Monday, including two fugitives from Wyoming wanted in escaping custody.
The Joint Criminal Apprehension Team received information that two fugitives from Wyoming were in Salt Lake County. The two were also suspects in a recent armed home invasion robbery, said JCAT Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Jim Phelps.
Officers set up a surveillance on an apartment near 4700 S. Redwood Road and spotted the two men as well as two others get into a car about 7 p.m. Sunday. Deputies followed the vehicle to a store parking lot near 4100 S. Redwood Road where they tried to pull it over, Phelps said. Instead, the pickup truck took off.
Near 6600 South and 500 West, the vehicle crashed through a fence at the end of a dead-end street. The four occupants got out and ran. One man, one of the Wyoming fugitives, was caught a short time later after a police K-9 found him hiding in a Dumpster. The man had a loaded firearm in a bag he was carrying with him, Phelps said.
A woman also was tracked down and caught almost immediately, he said.
Officers checking the abandoned truck found a sawed-off shotgun in the back, Phelps said.
After regrouping, JCAT, along with members of the Metro Gang Unit and several local police departments, got information that a third suspect might have made his way to West Jordan. When deputies arrived they found the man hiding in a basement closet, Phelps said.
About 3 a.m. Monday, JCAT members held surveillance at the residence of the girlfriend of the final suspect. The man eventually walked outside and got into another car as a passenger, Phelps said.
Detectives attempted to pull the vehicle over. After it stopped, the man got out and ran. Pursuing officers Tasered the man just as he was attempting to jump over a fence, Phelps said. They then took him into custody.
