Preps of the week

Danielle Gaztambide, Judge Memorial girls soccer: Gaztambide appears poised to build on a fantastic freshman season with an even stronger sophomore year after last week's performance. The Bulldogs forward, who also plays club soccer for Sparta 94, racked up five goals in a pair of victories — scoring twice against Lehi and earning a hat trick against Wasatch.

In addition to playing soccer, Gaztambide is a standout track athlete. She was the Region 10 champ in the 100 meters this past spring. Gaztambide excels in the classrom as well where she is an honors student with a 3.9 GPA. She is also an active member of the Basque community in Salt Lake.

Nik Allred, Ogden, football: This senior quarterback had himself a dream start to the 2009 football season.

He completed 22-of-35 passes for 469 yards and three touchdowns, with 392 yards coming in the first half. He also added 13 carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Allred's 540 yards of total offense ranks second all-time according to the UHSAA record books, second only to Ryan Zimmerman's 483 yards for Mountain Crest in 2002.

His 469 passing yards ranks fifth in the record books.

Allred's coach Eric Eyre is quick to point that in addition to his quarterback's scintillating exploits on the field he's also a team captain and maintains a 4.0 GPA.
