WEST VALLEY CITY — A man with a gun and drugs in his car evaded Utah Highway Patrol troopers Wednesday morning after he was pulled over, officials said.

It was just before 5 a.m. when the man, driving north on I-215 near 3600 South, was pulled over for a traffic violation, UHP spokesman Cameron Roden said.

Troopers made contact with the man, who remained in his vehicle "for a few minutes" before he got out and ran toward the Valley Fair Mall, Roden said. The troopers lost sight of him in that area.

The UHP believes it knows who the man is and that he is a restricted felon, Roden said. A search of the vehicle found a gun and drugs, which troopers suspect is methamphetamine.
