WEST JORDAN — A 31-year-old driver was killed in a traffic accident between a sport-utility vehicle and a semitrailer early Thursday.
About 4:40 a.m., the SUV was traveling eastbound on 9000 South when the driver ran a red light at the intersection of Bangerter Highway, said West Jordan Police Sgt. Drew Sanders.
The SUV was broadsided by a southbound truck. Phillip James Nielsen, of West Jordan, was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the semitrailer suffered only minor injuries that did not require him to be transported to the hospital.
Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the accident, Sanders said.
Bangerter Highway remained closed northbound between 9800 South and 9000 South until 9:20 a.m.
