OGDEN — An Ogden man and his mother were blasted by concrete fragments after an armed robber shot the ground in front of them for taking too long in retrieving nearly 300 pills, police said.
The man was sitting on his front porch with his mother and some other friends when they were approached about 6 p.m. by a man looking for someone named "James," said Ogden Police Lt. Scott Sangberg.
When the resident informed him that James had moved, the robber then demanded medication.
The resident went into his house to retrieve the medication, but Sangberg said he apparently took too long, because the suspect fired into the concrete at the man's feet when he returned with the pills. Police said evidence at the scene indicated the shooter used a .380-caliber handgun.
Police said the shots sent concrete flying, injuring the resident, his mother and a few of the others on the porch. The resident swiftly handed over 140 pills of OxyContin and 140 pills of oxycodone, and the gunman fled the scene near the 2500 block of Porter Avenue, Sangberg said.
No one suffered any serious injuries.
Police described the man as a white male in his early 20s, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall with light-brown, short, possibly spiked hair and about two days' growth of hair on his face. He was wearing a light-gray shirt with khaki shorts.
Sangberg wouldn't say how the gunman knew the resident had the drugs but said there was "something odd" about the incident.
