WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: In the Otter Classic opener, Dixie State College swept the University of Findlay in three sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, Friday at Seaside, Calif.
Brita Noble and Katie Luna led the Red Storm with 11 kills apiece. Kayley Poglajen racked up four aces and libero Jayci Jeffress finished with 22 digs.
For the Oilers, middle hitter Morgan had a team-high 13 kills and Abby Lavigne added 11 kills.
Dixie State will play the host school, Cal State Monterey Bay, at 6 p.m. this evening.
UTAH VALLEY
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Utah Valley University's Camie Manwill posted a double-double with 22 kills and 18 digs and teammate Kayli Broadbent added 16 kills, including eight in the fourth set, in leading the Wolverines to the 25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19 season-opening victory over Gonzaga in the first-ever meeting between the two teams Friday night at the Weber State Invitational in Ogden.
"Those two (Manwill and Broadbent) are huge and when they got their game on they were hard to stop," Utah Valley University volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "In that fourth set, Kayli started to play her game."
The victory was Utah Valley's first season-opening win as a four-year program.
"It's a step forward and it brings us a little closer to the goals that we set," Atoa said of the victory. "Hopefully we can improve on this."
Despite hitting at .093 percent in the first set, the Wolverines held off the Zags 25-22. UVU, however, saw an increase in its attack percentage throughout the remainder of the match.
In the second match, UVU hit at .205 then followed with .333 in the third and finally .432 in the final set that they won 25-19.
"As far as hitting goes we struggled a little bit at the beginning and we were fortunate to win the first set," Atoa said. "I think it was great we were able to improve, especially in that last set when we started playing like I expected our outsides to play."
Broadbent had four of her eight kills in the fourth set early on as UVU gained an 11-4 lead. Gonzaga pulled two within four points on a couple of occasions before the Wolverines put the set away.
In the first set of the match, the Wolverines led by as many as eight points only to see the Zags (0-1) take the lead at 20-18. Down the stretch, Dani Robison and Chelsey Garfield had two kills each to rally the Wolverines back for the 25-22 victory.
The Wolverines led by a point late in the second set, and Manwill had two kills in the final three points to hold of the Zags.
Gonzaga never trailed in the third set, although the set was tied twice late. The Wolverines had an attack error and a service error after knotting the score at 23-23 before losing the only set of the match.
Manwill hit at a .311 percentage while Broadbent hit at .211. Allyce Jones tallied 23 digs and Kathleen Stevens added 10.
The Wolverines are back in action today when they play tournament host Weber State at 1 p.m. and Utah State at 5 p.m. to conclude the Invitational.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Seattle scored two second-half goals to top Utah Valley, 2-0, in NCAA women's soccer on Friday on the campus of the University of Idaho at Moscow, Idaho.
After playing 68 scoreless minutes, the Redhawks (3-1) broke through when Lauren Munechika scored on an cross from Jamie Coe in the 69th minute. Munechika scored from just three yards out when Coe's pass was deflected right in front of her.
Then, as the Wolverines (0-2) attempted to push forward trying to tie the game, Maddy Cartwright scored a decisive goal to give Seattle a cushion. Cartwright beat Wolverine keeper Hailey Brown one-on-one and put the ball in the net from 10 yards away. Kara Kuttler got the assist on Cartwright's goal..
"Overall, I thought we played pretty good, especially in the first half. It was a marked improvement from last week's loss at Utah. We were able to do a lot of things we worked on this week," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "It's obviously not a result we're happy with, but the girls fought hard and did some good things. We just made a couple of costly mistakes."
The stat sheet was even for the most part, although Seattle did hold a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Redhawks keeper Madison Goverde recorded three saves and earned the shutout. Brown had five saves for the Wolverines.
Lauren Bluth finished with three shots for UVU, one of which was on goal with Kendra Buchanan and Kelsey Kimball also credited for a shot on goal each..
Utah Valley will stay in Moscow to face Idaho on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT. The Wolverines' home opener is next Friday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. against Wyoming.
WESTMINSTER
MEN'S SOCCER: The Master's College got a goal from Marlon Lindo in the 83rd minute to defeat Westminster 1-0 on Friday night at La Mirada, Calif. The game was moved to Biola University due to the air quality around The Master's College campus. The loss drops the Griffins to 0-2 on the year.
Westminster didn't get many scoring opportunities throughout the contest. They only managed five shots and only two on frame. Jeff Gardner and Dennis Sellis recorded the two shots on goal for the Griffins. The Master's College had 12 total shots and each team attempted three corner kicks. Val Campbell recorded five saves in his second loss of the young season.
Westminster will conclude the season-opening road trip when it faces No. 10 Azusa Pacific this afternoon. That game is the final match of the Cougar Classic hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The Griffins went 1-1 at the Sunbird Invitational hosted by Fresno Pacific University on Friday at Fresno, Calif. The Griffins won the day's first match 3-0 over Menlo College. Southern Oregon took the final match of the day in a three-set sweep. Westminster is now 2-4 on the season heading into day two of the tournament.
Westminster earned its first sweep of the season with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-19 victory against Menlo College. Westminster was led by 10 kills from Ashley Marchant. Marchant hit .381 in the match while chipping in three digs. Ericka Evans and Stephanie Jones finished with seven kills apiece. Katie McLintock recorded 16 digs and Megan Evans dished out 24 assists.
Southern Oregon handed the Griffins a 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 defeat to conclude the first day of action. Marchant again led the team in kills, this time with 12. Westminster hit just .115 as a team in the match compared to .330 by Southern Oregon. Whitney Roseborough finished with four kills and Becky Burke added three.
Westminster will face Cornerstone and No. 1 Fresno Pacific during the second day of the tournament today. The Fresno match will mark the third consecutive year the Griffins have faced Fresno when they were ranked No. 1 in the country.
