Even though the children have settled into the new school year, the fall theater season hasn't begun.

But if you're looking for a fun, close-to-home activity for Labor Day weekend, there are two productions to check out.

"Always … Patsy Cline," Sept. 3-19, The Grand Theatre, 1575 S. State.

In its fourth presentation, and back by popular demand, the music of America's legendary singing star, Patsy Cline, is blended in the heart-felt true story of a rare friendship.

A fan meets Patsy one night and the two stay in touch for a lifetime. The show is filled with Patsy's music, including "Crazy," "I Fall to Pieces" and "Walkin' After Midnight," and features the return of local actors Erica Hansen, theater critic at the Deseret News, and Toni Byrd.

Shows are nightly except Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights, 7:30 p.m., with 2 p.m. Saturday matinees available. Tickets are $9-$24 (801-957-3322 or www.the-grand.org).

"Vincent," Sept. 3-4, Highland High School, 2166 S. 1700 East.

Highland theater teacher John Newman will perform the one-man play, written by Leonard Nimoy.

Newman will present the play with funding from the Reba R. Robertson Award, which he received from the Children's Theatre Foundation of America in 2008. He decided to use the money to perform a play for his students.

The play is about Vincent Van Gogh's brother, Theo, as he talks about the many letters he received from his artist brother.

The show also includes a slide show featuring Van Gogh's paintings.

Shows are Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 4 at 3 p.m., free. Please contact john.newman@slc.k12.ut.us for more information.
