BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A 29-year-old man was seriously injured Tuesday when he fell 30 feet while rock climbing.
The man was climbing Stair's Gulch, about three miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, when one of his climbing anchors came loose, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson said. The man landed on some rocks and broke both ankles.
Due to the man's location, Hutson said it was difficult for rescuers to reach him so they called out the search and rescue mountain team to climb into the area and get the man off of the mountain. They were able to extract the man and he was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in "serious, but not life-threatening condition," Hutson said.
