Hero worship used to be an important part of a kid's life. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Joe Louis, Babe Ruth, Orphan Annie, Jim Thorpe, Charles Lindbergh were among them. They were worshipped, emulated and praised. They were good-natured, honest, hard workers. They earned our respect. They guarded their reputation.
Often, today, achievers have their fame tarnished. Valuable reputations hardly exist. Respect is passe. Avarice has replaced the heirloom of respect.
