SANDY — A water main break near 10700 South and Dimple Dell Road halted holiday plans for two families late Thursday morning.
Kaydee Sorensen had just returned from the grocery store when she saw the flood headed her way. She and her family are living in an uncle's home while he is out of the country, Sorensen said.
"You wouldn't believe how quick it was coming down," she said. "It was flooding the house on all sides."
Sorensen and her twin 18-month-old boys were unhurt in the deluge, but the basement and yard were heavily damaged. The home next door was also harmed, but the city had disaster cleanup workers in the houses within hours.
"With the amount of water there was, it could have been a lot worse," Sorensen said. "I think we were lucky."
Sandy has insurance coverage for homeowners and businesses affected by public works disasters.
Water main breaks are fairly common in the winter, said a dispatcher from the Valley Emergency Communications Center.
