1. NORTH SALT LAKE, Jan. 4 — Brittany Nichols, 23, was stabbed to death after trying to break up with her boyfriend. Johnny Bell, 21, boarded a bus for California after the homicide. He was stopped by police in Cove Fort and arrested. Bell pleaded guilty to murder, a first-degree felony, and was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison. His first chance at parole is in 2034. 2. SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 15 — Cesar Ramirez, 18, was shot Jan. 9 while driving with a friend along I-15 near 2100 South, and later died as a result of his injuries. Originally, investigators thought the incident may have been a road rage over texting while driving but later determined it to be a case of gang violence. Matthew James Day, 24, of West Point, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, a second-degree felony, was sentenced to a term of two to 20 years in prison. Motive: gangs. Method: shooting.
3. KEARNS, Jan. 21 — Esteban Manuel Saidi, 16, was shot and killed during a fight between two other Kearns High School students about a block away from the school. Saidi was a bystander. Ricky Angilau, 16, was charged as an adult with murder, a first-degree felony. The case is on hold while two issues involving Angilau being prosecuted in the adult system are being appealed to the Utah Supreme Court. Alleged motive: gangs. Method: shooting.
4. SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 27 — Adolph Neal, 69, was stabbed in the throat and killed during a drug-related dispute at an apartment complex at 320 E. 100 South. Joy Lynn Adams, an acquaintance of Neal, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to murder, a first-degree felony. She was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Motive: drugs. Method: stabbing.
5. WEST VALLEY CITY, Feb. 5 — JoJo Brandstatt, 18, was shot and killed on the West Ridge Golf Course allegedly because he was wearing a red shirt — the color of a rival gang. Prosecutors say Antonie Hunter Farani, a 14-year-old gang member, was the reported ring leader of the group and the triggerman. He is charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and has been certified to stand trial in adult court. If convicted, he cannot face the death penalty because of his age. Co-defendants Jeremiah H. Williamson, 28, Spencer Isaiah Cater, 18, and Shardise O. Malaga, 19, have each pleaded not guilty to murder, a first-degree felony. 6. OGDEN, Feb. 17 — Tony Padilla, 22, was stabbed to death in an apartment at 503 26th St. Police say Kurt Hayes Wangler, 37, had just been released from jail and went straight to his estranged wife's apartment where he found his girlfriend and Padilla. After stabbing Padilla to death, Wangler convinced his estranged wife to flee with him. Both were found in downtown Salt Lake City. Wangler pleaded guilty to murder, a first-degree felony, in July and was sentenced to serve 16 years to life in prison. Motive: domestic. Method: stabbing.
7. PLEASANT GROVE, Feb. 27 — Jeffery Boyd Ackerman, 45, was shot and killed during a foot chase near his parents' home. His nephew. Colton Louder, 25, and he had both used methamphetamine. Ackerman chased Louder through a Pleasant Grove neighborhood for an unknown reason. The chase ended when Louder shot back at Ackerman, striking him several times. Louder pleaded guilty to manslaughter, a first-degree felony, and was sentenced to five years to life in prison. Motive: drugs. Method: shooting.
8. PROVO, March 6 — Katelyn Mikolasy, 16, was shot in the face and killed by a 13-year-old friend. The young suspect had taken a gun from his grandfather's safe and was showing it off to his friends when it accidentally went off and struck Mikolasy in the face. He was convicted in juvenile court of manslaughter. Motive: accident. Method: shooting.
9. BLANDING, Navajo Reservation, March 14 — Sebastian Yellowman, 17, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in Four Corners area. Yellowman was reportedly with his brothers when the stabbing occurred. Witnesses, however, have been unwilling to cooperate with federal investigators, who are still probing the case. 10. OGDEN, April 21 — Maurice A. Lee, 56, was shot to death following a night of heavy drinking with a friend. Police say Brad Ricks, 53, called officers to say he had shot someone inside his home. When investigators arrived, they found a lot of weapons and alcohol. Ricks originally told police both men had been drinking heavily and looking at his cache of weapons when the victim told Ricks to shoot him. Ricks is charged with murder, a first-degree felony. A trial is scheduled for Jan. 25. Alleged motive: intoxication. Method: shooting.
11. WEST VALLEY CITY, May 22 — Kim Hain, 33, was brutally beaten in the bedroom of her home, 6616 W. Fanfare Court. Her next door neighbor, Martin Vuksinick, 18, was charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony. Vuksinick's mother was Hain's best friend. In the days immediately following the death, Vuksinick could be seen consoling others in the neighborhood and did interviews with the media. "She never had an enemy in the world," Vuksinick told the Deseret News. "Why her? It's so shocking." Alleged motive: unknown. Method: blunt force.
12. ROCKVILLE, Washington County, July 7 — The body of Celso Ayala-Avelos, 22, was found near Gooseberry Mesa about seven miles south of Rockville in a remote corner of southwest Utah. He had been shot multiple times. It took authorities several days to identify the Las Vegas man due to decomposition of the body. Avelos was driving with his brother and cousin when the group somehow got into a confrontation with another group. Avelos became separated from his brothers who hiked all night to the main road. The boys hitched a ride from a passing motorist. No arrests have been made. Investigators were looking for the driver to ask questions, though she is not considered a suspect in the case. 13. SALT LAKE CITY, July 19 — Krystal Flores, 21, was shot in the head while attending a house party at 1309 Stewart St. She died two weeks later. Police say she was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of rival gangs, although she was not a gang member herself. A second victim, a man, was found in a driveway across the street with a gunshot wound to the chest. He survived his injuries. Police were still looking for suspects in the case. Motive: gangs. 14. SOUTH JORDAN, July 25 — Stephen Jon Lasiloo, 21, from New Mexico, was in Salt Lake County visiting relatives when he went to a party at a house near 11400 South and 450 West. He got into an altercation with a juvenile in the house. After he left and was walking along the sidewalk, a car pulled up along the curb and Lasiloo was shot in the chest and killed. Joshua Buie, who was 16 at the time but now is 17, was charged as an adult with murder, a first-degree felony. Alleged motive: fight. Method: shooting.
15. COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Aug. 17 — Touch Choun, who also went by "Jennifer Lambdin," was brutally beaten and stabbed to death in her home. Her husband, Dennis Lambdin, 60, was charged with murder, a first-degree felony. Police say he e-mailed a friend out of state about what he had allegedly done shortly after the incident. That person, in turn, called police in Utah. A search warrant later revealed Lambdin may have killed Choun in an act of rage after learning she might have been having an affair, and then talked to his friend about killing himself. 16. CEDAR CITY, Aug. 23 — Misty Lamoreaux, 19, was shot to death in her apartment. Her husband, Tristan Jared Lamoreaux, 24, has been charged with murder, a first-degree felony. Investigators say he told them he was trying to prevent his wife from committing suicide when the gun accidentally discharged. Tristan Lamoreaux fired six shots from a semi-automatic handgun into his wife's body; however, five bullets were found in the weapon, indicating that he had reloaded the gun during the slaying, police say. 17. WEST VALLEY CITY, Sept. 13 — Jose Venegas, 35, was shot and killed in his driveway, near 3200 West and 2920 South. His wife was inside the home when she heard a gunshot and walked outside to find her husband shot. Police are still working on identifying suspects. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.
18. SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 2 — Lisa M. Olivera, 32, died inside her home from a single stab wound to the neck. Her estranged husband, Daniel Leonard Olivera, 33, who had been staying with the victim, was arrested. The stabbing occurred following an argument with his wife. After the stabbing, Olivera ran to his sister's house, covered in blood and threatened to also hurt her and her male roommate. Olivera pleaded guilty to murder, a first-degree felony, and will be sentenced Feb. 22. Motive: domestic. Method: stabbing.
19. SANDY, Oct. 8 — Milo Doxey, 9 months, was killed while being watched by the boyfriend of a woman who was a friend of the mother. Doctors say Milo suffered severe head trauma consistent with being a shaken baby and a violent impact with a hard surface or object. Jared Billette, 23, pleaded guilty to child abuse homicide, a first-degree felony, and will be sentenced Feb. 1. Motive: child abuse. Method: shaking.
20 and 21. CASTLE DALE, Oct. 21 — William Sharp, 51, and Charmaine Sharp, 54, were shot and killed inside their home. The Sharps' son, Peter Simon Sharp, 26, is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, a first-degree felony. Four of his siblings were also in the home at the time of the shootings. Family members say Peter Sharp had suffered from mental problems following an accident several years ago in which he suffered a traumatic head injury. In November, Sharp was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation, and a review will be held Jan. 5. Alleged motive: unknown. Method: shooting.
22. OREM, Oct. 25 — Marvin Sidwell, 51, was shot to death in the home he shared with his mother at 433 S. 360 West in Orem. His brother-in-law, Stephen E. Strate, 54, is charged with murder, a first-degree felony. Strate called police immediately after the shooting and said Sidwell, who had a history of drug problems, had attacked him with a chair. Strate said he shot Sidwell six or seven times in self-defense. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 27. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.
23. PAYSON, Nov. 16 — Kay Mortensen, 70, a retired BYU professor, was found dead in his rural home. Police initially said he was killed after two men broke into his home and slit his throat, while Mortensen's son and daughter-in-law were tied up but otherwise not injured. However, police have since said there are troubling inconsistencies in the statements of people they interviewed. The family is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and convictions of those responsible. Motive: unknown. Method: unknown.
24. NORTH LOGAN, Nov. 18 — Jesus Yandel Martinez, 4 months, died almost a week after being violently shaken. Francisco Javier Martinez is charged with child abuse homicide, a first-degree felony. Alleged motive: child abuse. Method: shaking.
25. WEST JORDAN, Nov. 21 — Michelle Welch, 54, a dispatcher for Salt Lake police for 30 years, was shot and killed inside her home in a murder-suicide. Her death led to a four-hour standoff with police, which ended when Gary Howard, 43, turned a shotgun on himself. Police said Welch and Howard had an off-and-on relationship for years. 26. UTAH STATE PRISON, Nov. 22 — Mark Helms, 47, an inmate at the Utah State Prison, was killed by his cellmate. Athian Kuot Mawien, 29, was charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony. Investigators say he strangled Helms with a ligature made from a laundry bag. Both men were already serving time for sex offenses. The two men, who had been cellmates less than a month, reportedly got into a disagreement that escalated into a fistfight. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 31. Alleged motive: argument. 27. WEST VALLEY CITY, Nov. 26 — Steve Doolittle, 41, was stabbed to death during a fight at a former girlfriend's house near 3600 South and 5450 West. He lived across the street. Police say Justin Jay Guymon, who was dating the woman, fought with Doolittle, who received several stab wounds. Guymon, 28, is charged with murder, a first-degree felony. Alleged motive: domestic. 28 and 29. ROY, Nov. 30 — Pamela Knight Jeffries, 56, and her son, Matthew Roddy, 30,were killed inside their mobile home, 3860 S. Midland Drive. Jeffries was kicked in the head and then had a plastic bag placed over her head that was sealed by duct tape. Roddy suffered multiple stab wounds to his face, head and chest. Jeremy Lee Valdes, 33, and his girlfriend, Miranda Mandy Statler, 26, were both charged in connection with the crime. Valdes is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, a first-degree felony. The four had reportedly been arguing about an alleged prescription drug theft. A judge has ordered a mental competency review for Valdes. Statler is charged with obstruction of justice and two counts of abuse/desecration of a dead human body, all third-degree felonies. Alleged motive: argument/drugs. 30, 31 and 32. WEST JORDAN, Dec. 17 — Melissa Ann Matern, 31, and her two sons, 6-year-old Gabriel, and 4-year-old Raiden, were shot and killed inside their apartment, near 9300 S. Redwood Road. Justin Zachariah Matern, 34, the boys' father and Melissa's estranged husband, shot his family before turning his gun on himself. Between killing his family and himself, he sent text messages to friends and family members telling them what he had done. Friends say the couple had serious financial problems and she left him about a month earlier. Motive: domestic. Method: shooting.
33. OGDEN, Dec. 22 — Gilberto Jesus-Robles, aka Jesus Sanchez, age unknown, was found by his roommate with his throat slashed in the apartment they shared at 2650 Adams Ave. He was lying face up in his bed, partially covered with a blanket, investigators said, with several puncture wounds and a slashing wound to his neck. Ogden police have no suspects in the case and have not recovered a murder weapon. Motive: unknown. Method: stabbing.
34. OGDEN, Dec. 25 — Robert Stom, 65, was shot multiple times in an apparent murder-suicide. His wife, Patricia Stom, 70, was also found dead from a gunshot wound inside their home at 862 Kershaw St. Police say Stom had terminal health problems. Motive: domestic. Method: shooting.
