Y. 'Entrepreneur Factory' highlighted
Brigham Young University's entrepreneur program was featured in Business Week as a "surprising success" in turning faculty research into commercialized products.
The LDS "university now ranks first in the country in the number of startups, licenses and patent applications per research dollar spent, according to the Association of University Technology Managers. BYU-licensed technology led to the creation of nine new companies last year on a research budget of roughly $30 million. Stanford, with a budget of $1.1 billion, spawned the same number of startups," according to the article published in the Dec. 7 edition.
The article also highlights Mike Alder and Dee Anderson, who were hired to run the technology transfer department three years ago.

Judge denies new trial in attacks
CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A Circuit Court judge has denied a new trial for a Virginia man convicted of killing a Mormon missionary in January 2006.
James Boughton Jr. sought a new trial, alleging juror misconduct during his three-week trial in Chesapeake in the shooting death of Morgan W. Young of Bountiful, Utah.
In December 2008, jurors convicted Boughton of killing Young with a gunshot to the head and wounding another missionary, Joshua Heidbrink of Greeley, Colo. The missionaries were shot while knocking on doors in the southeast Virginia city.
Boughton's attorney, Andrew Sachs, said Jan. 11 he intends to seek a new trial.
Jurors recommended a 38-year sentence for Boughton. Sentencing has not yet been set.
