MEN'S BASKETBALL: Nick Howard tipped in a missed jumper with 2.4 seconds left on Monday night, giving Dixie State College a 74-72 win over host Dominican University in Pacific West Conference play at San Rafael, Calif.
The senior center scored all 14 of his points on 5-of-7 shooting after halftime and joined Tom Whitehead (21 points, 7-of-12 FG), Andy Palmer (16 points, 6-of-12 FG) and Donovan Plunkett (15 points, 3-of-6 3-pointers) in double figures for the Red Storm.
Dixie State (11-3, 5-0 Pac West) increased its winning streak to six games, its best run since a five-game jaunt in November 2004.
With 52 seconds left, Penguins center Killian Larson was fouled on a lay-up and sank the free throw for a 72-70 Dominican lead. Whitehead drew a foul and sank two foul shots to tie the game for the 10th time, setting the stage for the game's final ticks.
Alex Ward missed a jumper for the Penguins, with Howard pulling the rebound for Dixie State. After a timeout, the Storm had 16 seconds to run a play. Plunkett released a 3-pointer from the corner that missed short, but fell right into Howard's hand for the game-winning tip-in. A three-quarter-court heave from McNally missed to the right and Dixie State held on for the win.
Dominican (4-11, 1-3 Pac West) was led by freshman Austin Bryan with 29 points and Lewis with 16.
Dixie State returns home next Monday night to face Notre Dame de Namur University. Tip time with the Argonauts is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Burns Arena.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Four Dixie State players scored in double figures, with freshman Johnna Brown leading the way with 15 points in a 83-62 victory over the Penguins of Dominican University in Pacific West Conference action Monday night at San Rafael, Calif.
Dominican (4-11, 1-3 PACWEST), a first-year member of the Pacific West Athletic Conference and having just completed the transition from NAIA to the NCAA Division II, hosted the Red Storm for the first meeting in history.
The Red Storm (8-6, 4-1) jumped to out to an early 18-8 lead with a 12-4 run on its way to a 44-35 halftime lead.
In the second half, it was all the Red Storm. Brown scored 10 of her 15 points as DSC built a 25-point lead with 5:07 left in the game. For the second consecutive game senior guard Jessie Ingraham scored in double figures, collecting 15 points. Also scoring in double figures was junior guard Amber Scruggs with 11 points and senior forward Tanya Clark with 10. Freshman forward Deanna Daniels collected 11 rebounds.
The Red Storm will have six days off before playing host to Notre Dame de Namur on Monday. Jan. 25. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Burns Arena.
