OGDEN — A 20-year-old man, under investigation on attempted murder, was shot Wednesday in what police believe may be a case of self-defense.
Rudy Enrique Garcia suffered minor injuries after police say he was shot in the chest by his father-in-law about 1 a.m.
Garcia got into a domestic dispute with his wife at their home, 563 W. 24th St., said Ogden Police Lt. Scott Sangberg. He eventually told her to leave, and she called her father to pick up her and her 2-year-old daughter. While Eliazar Cantu Jr., 39, was loading his daughter and granddaughter into his car, Garcia exited the home and approached them in what Cantu perceived as a "threatening manner," Sangberg said.
Cantu pulled out a pistol and fired once at Garcia. The bullet grazed his ribs and lodged in his skin, Sangberg said. Garcia was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital Center, where he was treated and later released.
Cantu was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault. But Sangberg said prosecutors would review the case to determine if the shooting was in self-defense.
"(Her) father probably had every reason to be scared," he said.
Garcia is a documented gang member, according to police.
On July 29, police believe he shot a rival gang member in the leg.
In September, he was charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony, in connection with that incident following his arrest after a high-speed chase with police.
