NEWARK, Del. — More than 450 books for children were recently donated to the A.I. duPont Pediatric Clinic for its "Reach Out and Read" program, which promotes literacy as part of pediatric care. The donations were the result of a book drive spearheaded by three siblings, patients of the clinic, who wanted to express their appreciation to the doctors and staff. The siblings, Chandler McNeil, Paigey McNeil and Brigham Mercadante, began by alerting family and friends about the book drive. Soon, youths from their Mormon ward, the Newark 1st Ward in Delaware, were also involved, collecting books from members of the congregation. The initial goal of collecting 100 books was met within a few days, and a new goal of 300 books was set. The children were excited to have that goal surpassed and were pleased to present a total of 465 books to the clinic.
