SALEM, Utah County — Police arrested the driver of an all-terrain vehicle Thursday after they say he ran a stop sign, crashed and fled on foot.
An officer initiated a traffic stop when he saw the man drive a three-wheeler through an intersection around 2 a.m., according to Salem Police Chief Brad James.
The driver refused to stop, then tipped over on the snowy road after a three-block chase.
The officer followed the man's tracks through several backyards before tackling him. James said the driver had a strong odor of alcohol and refused to give a breath sample.
Weston Ted Ericksen, 26, of Spanish Fork, was booked into jail for investigation of driving under the influence, evading police and driving an off-highway vehicle on a city street.
James said a Salem ordinance allows converted ATVs to be driven in the city but only if they are converted to be street-legal, and this one was not.
Ericksen is on probation for a November DUI conviction in Spanish Fork.
