WEST VALLEY CITY — A blaze that tore through the Carpet Barn on New Year's Eve was still smoldering on Friday.
Fire was still smoldering within several large rolls of carpet at the 42-year-old business at 3725 S. Redwood Road. Crews remained on scene throughout the day Friday, Battalion Chief Bob Fitzgerald said. He said too much water sprayed on the fire caused flooding concerns at nearby apartments and a mobile home park.
It is believed the fire was started by an employee using a weed burner to melt ice on the loading dock. The heat likely ignited nearby materials, after which flames spread quickly through highly flammable materials.
Only the owners and two employees were inside the building at the time the fire started, and all were able to exit safely.
