Recently, a correspondent to the Readers' Forum (Dec. 2) raised the question as to whether anyone knew how much atmospheric carbon dioxide is acceptable. The answer is yes. The first 20 parts per million raises Earth's temperature by about 1.5 degrees Celsius. The next 20 ppm adds only about another 0.5 degree, and additional increments add even less.

What additional carbon does do, however, is enhance plant growth.
