Bragging rights between fans of the University of Texas and their rivals

at the University of Oklahoma can be serious business. If the Sooners

defeat the Longhorns on the gridiron, Oklahoma fans will relish the victory

all year long — and vice versa.

A pair of U.S. Air Force officers — including an LDS major —

have utilized the Texas/Oklahoma rivalry to better and bless the lives of

scores of war-weary Afghans, including many children.

Maj. Tobin Griffeth is a lifelong Mormon and a returned

missionary. He began his first military deployment in Afghanistan about six

months ago. Soon after arriving in the country, Griffeth developed

a concern and love for the Afghan people. Many, he saw, had grown up

surrounded by conflict, and most knew disabling poverty. Although he came

from a foreign country and culture and practiced a different religion than

most Afghans, Griffeth began looking for opportunities to find

common ground with the local people.
