The Joseph Smith Sr. family left Vermont and moved to western New York in 1816. Just where the family first lived in Palmyra is not known with certainty. The street sign, right, shows that this is the intersection of Johnson and Vienna streets in Palmyra. Historians have speculated that the Smiths may have once lived near here or, perhaps, operated a small vending business selling cake and ale at the site. There is also a tradition that the Joseph Smith Sr. family once lived somewhere on west Main Street, above, before they moved to the log home on Stafford Road. The exact site or when they might have lived there has not been determined.
