UVU's Swarbrick can finish out season

OREM — Utah Valley senior forward Jordan Swarbrick has been granted an extension of his five-year period of eligibility by the NCAA, allowing him to finish out the entire 2010-11 basketball season.

Swarbrick had originally been eligible to play until January, meaning he would have missed the Great West Conference season, but can now finish out his fourth season of competition.

"We're all really excited to have him for the entire season," said Wolverine head coach Dick Hunsaker.

Clarification

In response to a column, written by Randy Hollis, which ran in Sunday's Deseret News sports section, Utah State University Athletics Director Scott Barnes reissued the following statement regarding the Aggies' reported opportunity to leave the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West Conference earlier this year:

"At the point in time when Utah State was contacted by the MWC, we had a binding agreement with the WAC and were well-positioned with nine members, which included BYU. We were simply committed to uphold our agreement with fellow WAC members. We respectfully declined MWC interest and believed all WAC members would remain committed to our agreement.

"There is some level of confusion regarding the last-minute communication the Mountain West Conference had with Utah State, Fresno State and Nevada. ... USU did not receive an offer to join the MWC; rather, we received an inquiry of interest. There is a considerable difference between the two. However, we would have absolutely made the same decision again either way."
