MIDVALE — A 21-year-old woman died Thursday afternoon after the vehicle she was riding in collided with a semitrailer.

The accident happened when the semitrailer swerved to avoid slowed traffic on northbound I-15, near 7800 South, at around 1:45 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol trooper Todd Johnson said. The semitrailer hit two pickup trucks as it continued to swerve out of control and as it was tipping over, the woman's vehicle collided with the undercarriage.

The woman was taken by and ambulance to an area hospital in extremely critical condition and later died, Johnson said.

Drivers of the other three vehicles involved in the accident received minor injuries.

The woman has yet to be identified.

Traffic was being diverted at 9000 South while the accident was investigated and cleared from the freeway.

UHP spokesman Brian Hyer said traffic was backed up as far as the Point of the Mountain.

The truck had been hauling a load of dried peas. Johnson said he did not know if the truck's load was compromised.
