3 snowmobilers rescued in Rich County

RANDOLPH, Rich County — Two snowmobilers were airlifted Monday from the Curtis Creek area of Monte Cristo after unexpectedly spending the night in blizzard conditions.

Search and rescue teams from Rich and Cache counties began looking for three snowmobilers after the trio was reported overdue at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Rich County Sheriff Dale Stacey said.

Stacey said one member of the party, Tim Herold, was located early Monday morning by searchers, who found the 46-year-old despite "a severe ground blizzard" that created poor visibility.

Herold told officials the other two overdue members of his party — 24-year-old Mason Ochinero and 22-year-old RanDee Herold — were well equipped to spend the night, if needed. Stacey said given that information, authorities called off the search at about 4 a.m. Monday.

The search resumed at 6:30 a.m. with assistance from a state Department of Public Safety helicopter, which spotted the remaining snowmobilers at about 10:30 a.m.

Ochinero and RanDee Herold were flown to the Monte Cristo area where family members were waiting for them. Both were cold, but in good health, Stacey said. They declined medical care.
