Riverton 8th grader wins service award

SALT LAKE CITY— Amber Barron, 14, of Riverton has been honored as one of Utah's top two youth volunteers for 2010 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

The national program honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteer service. The awards program, now in its 15th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

The other Utah award winner is Calan Olsen, 17, of Ephraim.

Barron was nominated by Girl Scouts of Utah. As a state winner, she will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C.,

She is an eighth-grader at South Hills Middle School, where she organized an after-school club that promotes fun activities for female and minority students in math, engineering and science, and encourages them to consider careers in these fields.
