Use initiatives sparingly

Beware of misusing the initiative process. The United States is a republic, not a democracy. Even the states are republics. (See U.S. Constitution, Article IV, Section 4, which states, "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government")

Because the people are not skilled in the legislative details, they choose legislators to represent them and expect the legislators to study and get informed. We should use the initiative process sparingly and with much care and knowledge. Do not get caught up in the hype and cunning words of man. The citizen sometimes feels pressured into signing the petitions and initiatives without really understanding their consequences. We should respect and inform our leaders, but not harangue them. If we circumvent the Legislature through misusing the initiative process, then we become a democracy, potentially one of the worst forms of government.
