HONOLULU, Hawaii — Dixie State mounted the biggest comeback in the school's brief NCAA Division II history to stay on track to claim the school's first Pac West title.
After trailing by as many as 20 points in the first half, the Red Storm rallied to overtake Chaminade in the second half and claim an 83-72 victory on Tuesday night.
Junior forward Tom Whitehead scored 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, collected seven rebounds and blocked five shots to keep Dixie State (15-4, 9-1) a game behind league leader Hawaii Pacific in the win column.
After cutting their original double-digit deficit to five, 41-36, by halftime, the Red Storm finally took their first lead when Jeremiah Barnes cut through the lane for a layup to make it 52-50. The Silverswords (7-15, 4-6) eventually regained a 58-57 lead with 8:05 left when Matt Cousins scored a layup. Dixie State retook the lead and outscored Chaminade 26-14 down the stretch to complete the comeback.
Dixie State continues its four-game Hawaiian road swing with a game against BYU-Hawaii on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 10:30 p.m. Mountain Time and will be broadcast live on BYU TV.
