High school girls basketball: Merdian gets first-round win

RICHFIELD — Despite falling behind early on, Region 18 champion Meridian rallied for a 41-39 victory over Bryce Valley Wednesday in the opening round of the 1A girls basketball tournament at the Sevier Valley Center.

The Mongoose didn't panic when it trailed by eight points after the first quarter, and it chipped away at that deficit the rest of the way and eventually pulled out the big victory.

Meridian's Estee Arts led all scorers with 19 points and Daniella Langston added eight.

Lesha Lefevre paced Bryce Valley offensively with 11 points.

DUCHESNE 65, WAYNE 38: Tasha Reilley knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 24 points as the Eagles cruised into the 1A quarterfinals after jumping out to a 20-6 first quarter lead.

ALTAMONT 46, MONTICELLO 35: The Longhorns used a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Buckaroos 19-4, to pull away for the first-round win. Whitney Fieldsted led the way for Altamont with 19 points.

PANGUITCH 45, ST. JOSEPH 27: Kalani Norris recorded 16 points and Shelby Taylor chipped in with 14 as the Bobcats jumped out to a 25-10 halftime lead against St. Joseph on their way to the opening-round victory.

PIUTE 71, TABIONA 31: Piute had four players score in double figures, including Kandice Gleave's 20 points, as it rolled to the first round victory to improve to 21-0 on the season. Amanda Bagley chipped in with 16 points.

ICS 49, GREEN RIVER 37: Intermountain Christian used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Green River to advance to the quarterfinals. Jenny Burns and Bridgett Grahmann combined for 28 points to lead ICS while Sarah Swalberg scored 19 points and buried five 3-pointers in a losing cause for the Pirates.

RICH 53, VALLEY 24: The Rebels rolled into the quarterfinals despite a sluggish start by outscoring Valley 46-13 after the first quarter. Ashley Argyle led Rich with 14 points and teammate Maud Peart chipped in with 13 points.

WHITEHORSE 47, MILFORD 43: Several Whitehorse players contributed as the Raiders secured a hard-fought first-round victory in the nightcap of the 1A tourney. Mildford's Andrea Mayer led all scorers with 23 points.
