High school sports: Preps of the week

DAVID HORIE, North Summit, swimming

This senior sprinter has almost single-handedly helped build a swimming program at North Summit High.

With North Summit's swim program struggling two years ago, Horie helped find a coach and recruited teammates. In the time that since ensued, the Braves' program has grown immensely.

Horie will swim the 50 free and 100 free at this weekend's 3A meet, hoping to place high in both events.

"I marvel at his leadership and work ethic," said North Summit coach Yance Fawcett. "He makes his teammates better by pushing them, as well as giving them the confidence that they can compete."

McKENZIE WELLS, Orem, swimming

Following in the footsteps of her hugely talented siblings, this talented freshman all-arounder has been making waves in the pool this winter.

At the Region 7 meet two weeks ago, Wells easily won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and led her team to two relay wins.

She'll look to build on that success at this weekend's 4A state meet, where Wells will swim the IM and 100 free.

And all along the way, Wells continues to show that she has the potential to be one of the state's elite swimmers, just like her older sister Kelsey and older brother Brady. Both were state champions at Orem High.
