SALT LAKE CITY — A man accused of stealing laptop computers was tracked through his jail mug shot, according to charges filed this week in 3rd District Court.
Last December, a man grabbed two laptop computers worth a total of $1,200 from the EZ Rent-to-Own store, 2974 W. 3500 South, the charges state. A store employee located the computers through software that tracks the equipment when connected to the Internet.
A search revealed that a woman had used one of the computers to log on to the Salt Lake County Jail's Web site to look up Shane Ellis Caster, 41, whose jail photo was recognized by the store employee as the person who took the laptops, the charges state. A detective also went through surveillance images from the store and identified the person who took the laptop as Caster, according to prosecutors.
Caster was charged with retail theft, a third-degree felony.
