BASEBALL: The Thunderbirds allowed eight runs in the bottom of the third inning, falling to the California Golden Bears 14-0 in the season opener on Friday afternoon at Berkeley, Calif.

"I think we just had some rust that we'll need to brush off for tomorrow's games," Southern Utah head coach David Eldredge said. "We were able to get nine hits against their ace, but we just weren't able to string things together. Part of that was some base running errors, but it was good to get out and I think we'll do better tomorrow."

A two-run single off the bat of Cal's Darrell Matthews gave the Bears their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second, with the home team adding eight more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-0 lead into the fourth inning.

Senior Braden Yardley came on in relief and pitched three scoreless innings for SUU while walking one and recording one strikeout.
