Campus briefs: Utah State

SOFTBALL: Utah State ended action Sunday at the San Diego State Campbell-Cartier Classic with a 13-3 six-inning loss to Western Kentucky and had its match-up with host San Diego State cancelled due to inclement weather.

The loss gives USU a 1-2 Classic record, with the lone victory a 7-4 upset of defending national champion and current No. 1 Washington on Friday. The Aggies lost to Penn State on Saturday, 6-1.

Utah State's six-inning 13-3 loss was the first time this season that the Aggies had been run ruled. The Lady Toppers scored two runs in the top of the second inning off of senior Stacey Ellingsworth, who was making her first start of the season. Lindsay Antone belted a two-run home run to give WKU the early 2-0 lead. The Lady Toppers added another run in the top of the third inning.

Utah State cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Senior shortstop Rachel Evans opened the inning with a single and stole second base. Senior center fielder Nicole (Rupp) Tindall followed with a single to right field, as Evans scored on an error by right fielder Jamie Hennis.

WKU broke the game open with two runs in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Toppers added five more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a commanding 13-1 lead.

USU fought back, scoring two in the bottom of the sixth inning. Red-shirt sophomore third baseman Kelley Kaneshiro singled up the middle, followed by a single from freshman designated player Kali Cancelosi to put runners on first and second with no outs. A ground out by freshman second baseman Tina Ferguson moved the runners to second and third. Senior catcher Simone Hubbard reached on an error by WKU pitcher Mallorie Sulaski that scored Kaneshiro. Junior Xaio Xue Chang grounded out to Sulaski, driving in freshman Katie Bowdidge, who was pinch running for Cancelosi. Evans grounded out to Sulaski to end USU's rally and end the game due to the run rule.
