Dorene Savage Hinckley Ewing passed away February 23, 2010, in Las Cruces, NM from pneumonia. Dorene was born March 24, 1933, in Montpelier, ID to Norma Lewis and Joseph Smith Savage. She spent much of her youth in Yeadon, PA and Green River, WY. When her family moved to Salt Lake City Dorene attended East High School, graduating in 1951. Dorene attended The University of Utah where she was a member of Lambda Delta Sigma. There she met David Narwyn Hinckley. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22, 1953. After her husband David passed away in 1965, Dorene moved her six children back to Salt Lake City. She enjoyed being a mother and doing further studies at the U of U. On January 25, 1968, she married Gordon J Ewing (widower of Carol Blanchard) and moved to Las Cruces, NM. Dorene then became mother to his four children: Steven, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Willard. Dorene and Gordon had two more children, Robert and Victoria, numbering 12 children in the combined family.
Dorene loved learning. She attended New Mexico State University, taking one class at a time as she worked toward her degree in English, graduating in 1993. She loved music (a waltz could make her happy!), flowers, and swimming. Dorene was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved her family and gave unselfishly of her time and talents to weld a family together, and to teach, guide, and encourage as she made home fun and interesting.
