4 Utah County pools or spas reopen

PROVO — Four of the six Utah County pools or spas that were closed recently by the Utah County Health Department due to noncompliance with a federal law are up and running again.

These are the Mt. Timpanogos Village Pool and Spa in American Fork, the Elevate Fitness Training Pool in Orem, the Liberty Square Apartment Spa in Provo and the Winter Haven Spa in Orem.

The spa at the Super 8 Motel in Provo also has reopened but still has some piping that needs to be checked out, said Jason Garrett, Utah County manager of infectious disease.

Main Springs Day Spa in Orem has decided to not comply and instead shut down its spa.

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act requires appropriate caps on pools and spas "to prevent the entrapment of individuals either due to suction or hair entanglement." The act is named for former Secretary of State James Baker's granddaughter, who died in 2002 after being trapped underwater by a hot tub's drain suction.

There are another 50 pools in Utah County that have not complied yet but are only open in the summer months. When the weather gets warmer, those pools will start working on compliance, Garrett said.
