Raise cigarette tax

According to the World Health Organization, 100 million people died of tobacco-related causes during the 20th century. Tobacco kills more than 400,000 each year in the United States.

The Utah Legislature wants to increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes from $.695 to $2.

If we are serious about eliminating tobacco, the tax should be $1 million per pack in every state. Unfortunately, politicians are hooked on the revenue, and smokers are hooked on the nicotine. Giving the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the $89 billion tobacco industry is pointless. We need a constitutional amendment to prohibit the growing, manufacture, sale and use of tobacco products.
