Taylorsville standoff ends with man's suicide

TAYLORSVILLE — A police standoff Friday night ended in suicide.

Officers received a call at 8:53 p.m. Friday to a home at 3715 W. 5100 South following an argument between Howard Salmond, 52, and his live-in girlfriend. During the fight, the man locked himself in a bedroom and threatened to shoot himself, said Taylorsville police detective Shannon Bennett.

His girlfriend and her teenage granddaughter were in a room next to the bedroom trying to talk to him, Bennett said. At some point during the conversation, a single shot was fired in the bedroom. The round from the shot came through the wall in the direction of the granddaughter and girlfriend, who fled the building and called 911. The women were unsure whether the shot had been fired at them.

Police arrived and called in a SWAT team. The SWAT officers tried to establish communication with Salmond inside the bedroom but had no success. They found the man dead from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No other injuries were reported. Investigators are still trying to determine if other factors contributed to the incident.
