Literary footnotes: Workshops, readings and other literary events in Utah

The Salt Lake Community College Writing Center is hosting a workshop on "Writing for Change: Civic Writing." Learn the techniques of civic writing, such as letters to editors and public officials. Come with a concern; stay to write a letter with the help of CWC writing coaches. The workshop will be held Feb. 9 at the Day Riverside Library; March 16 at the Sprague Library; and April 17, at the Chapman Library. The workshops will take place from 6-9 p.m. all three days. There is no cost, however, registration is required online at www.slcc.edu/cwc or by calling 801-957-4992.

The King's English Bookshop, 1511 S. 1500 East, hosts journalist Steve Early, who will read from "Embedded With Organized Labor: Journalistic Reflections on the Class War at Home," Feb. 9, 7 p.m.; also author Tyler Volk will discuss his new book, "CO2 Rising: The World's Greatest Environmental Challenge," Feb. 11, 7 p.m.; author Robert Birkby will read from and sign "Mountain Madness," Feb. 12, 7 p.m. (801-484-9100).

Davis County Library, South Branch, 725 S. Main, Bountiful, will hold a discussion hosted by Ellie Mitchell on the series "Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony," Feb. 10, 7 p.m. (801-295-8732).

Poet Susan Sample and essayist Patrick Madden will read from their works, Feb. 10, 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake Public Main Library, 210 E. 400 South (801-524-8200); authors Sara Zarr, Paul Genesse and Bobbie Pyron will discuss and sign their works, Feb. 13, 1 p.m.

The Guest Writers Series, sponsored by the University of Utah and the Salt Lake City Arts Council, will present readings by poets Jessica Garratt and Peter Gizzi on Feb. 11, 7 p.m., at the Finch Lane Gallery/Art Barn, 1340 E. 100 South. A reception will follow.

A poetry workshop sponsored by the Utah State Poetry Society will be held at the Bountiful/Davis Arts Center, 745 S. Main, Bountiful, 10 a.m-noon, Feb. 13. Rob Carney, author of "Weather Report" and "Boasts, Toasts and Ghosts," two-time winner of the Utah Book Award for Poetry, and professor of English and literature at Utah Valley University, will be the guest speaker. The Salt Lake County Library is pleased to partner with the Utah Grizzlies for the annual Griz Kids Winter Reading Program. Children ages 5-14 are encouraged to stop into any Salt Lake County Library and pick up a winter reading record to track their progress now through the end of March. Kids who complete the reading record will receive a prize and a voucher good for a free ticket to an upcoming Grizzlies game.

Christian Poets Guild is sponsoring a contest with a $1,000 grand prize. Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judged by guild contest director Dr. Jack Carroll. The contest is free to enter and open to poets of any age. Fifty prizes totaling more than $5,000 will be awarded. Entries must be received by Feb. 28 and may be submitted by mail to 7308 Heritage Drive, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620 or at www.freecontest.com. Those sending entries should include their name and address on the same page as the poem. A winners list will be sent to all entrants.
