SALT LAKE CITY — A former employee of a Salt Lake optical products company who is accused of forging checks totaling more than $230,000 told police she deserved to make more than $100,000 a year, charges state.

While an accountant for Sun Optics at 1785 S. 4490 West, Mondis B. Nkoy forged 48 checks and deposited them into her JP Morgan Chase Bank company checking account under the name of American Pioneer Financial Services Inc. between June 30, 2007, and Nov. 12, 2009, according to charges filed in 3rd District Court Tuesday.

Charges state Nkoy was laid off because of a reduction in force, and that her replacement discovered the payments made to American Pioneer Financial Services Inc., which is not a vendor for Sun Optics.

An internal audit uncovered the 48 forged checks. Charges state that searches of NKoy's work computer found a check template she allegedly used to produce the fraudulent checks.

Nkoy told police that she would write the checks whenever she needed money and change the accounting records to make it appear the payments were legitimate, charges state.

Nkoy is charged with second-degree felony theft and six counts of forgery, a third-degree felony.
