PHILADELPHIA — Dr. William T. Couldwell of Utah will be named secretary of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons for the second year of a three-year term at the association's annual meeting May 1-5.

He is professor and Joseph J. Yager Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. From 1996-2001, he was professor and chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y.

An active member of the surgeons' association since 1995, he has served on the group's board of directors since 2006, initially as a director-at-large and subsequently as secretary.

He is chairman of the editorial board of the association's peer-reviewed socioeconomic publication, AANS Neurosurgeon.

A native of Canada, Couldwell received his medical degree in 1984 from McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec.
