The first-ever Day of Service event in 2009 featured 554 projects, 1,267
community partners, 47,755 volunteers and 223,204 service hours
accrued. This year's event is expected to be even bigger.
On April 24, more than 50,000 Southeastern state residents will assemble
"love bags," plant fresh flowers, remove graffiti, repaint homes and
hand-tie quilts on the 2nd Annual Day of Service event.
Sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this
year's theme is "Helping Hands and Linking Arms." The event encourages
residents to focus on others who need assistance.
Elder Walter F. Gonzalez, of the Presidency of the Seventy, envisioned
this widespread service project after witnessing church members'
immediate response to natural disasters.
LDS congregations from the 14 participating states will partner with
business, city, county, humanitarian and faith-based organizations.
Already 300 partners and 400 projects are registered for the event.
