Jake Nelson of Park City High School won the Best Teen Chef Competition at the Art Institute of Salt Lake City on Saturday.

He received a $3,000 tuition scholarship to the Art Institute's culinary program and a trip to national Best Teen Chef Competition finals in Houston in May. Nelson competed against nine other high school seniors, chosen from nearly 30 applicants.

A $2,000 scholarship went to Corinne King of Cottonwood High School, and Gabrielle Munoz of Cyprus High won a $1,000 scholarship.

In a timed event, the students were required to prepare a shrimp cocktail appetizer and an entrée of sautéed chicken breast, rice and broccoli. They were judged on knife skills, organization, sanitation and timing, as well as the presentation, taste and texture of each finished dish.

George Stella of the Food Network is appearing at the Junior League's "Kids In the Kitchen" event April 24, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum, 44 W. 100 South.

Stella, host of "Low Carb and Lovin' It," will teach kids how to make fruit kebabs and host an Iron Chef Kids Challenge with teams chosen that day. The event is free to guests with an elementary-age child (www.kidsinthekitchen.org).

A Food Storage Conference will take place May 1 at the Weber State University Student Union Building in Ogden. Registration opens at 8 a.m.; workshops are 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Sponsored by Utah State University Extension, some of the conference workshops include "Storing and Cooking Wheat and Grains," "Using Dry Milk," "Storing and Using Dry Beans," "Food Storage Containers and Oxygen Packets," "Bread Making," "Just Add Water," "Using Food Storage Every Day," "Gluten Free Everyday Food Storage," "Mock Root Cellars and Produce Storage," "Food Storage on a Budget" and "Shelf Life of Food." Juiceworx, a smoothie shop, has opened at 1335 N. Highway 89 in Farmington. The eatery is located adjacent to Bodyworks Fitness Center and has a drive-through window as well as indoor seating.

The smoothies are made with real juice and all-natural products. Some of the menu items include Berries a Whey, Buff Banana, High Impax Acai, Orange a Whey, PB Powerhouse and Stormin' Strawberries. Smith's Food & Drug is sponsoring a Design a Reusable Shopping Bag" contest, along with other Kroger divisions across the country. Through May 21, customers can enter their design at www.smithsfoodanddrug.com.

The winning designer will receive a $1,000 gift card and will have their design sold in Kroger stores nationwide. Four finalists receive a $250 Kroger gift card and five runners-up will receive a $100 Kroger gift card. In 2009, Smith's customers who shopped with re-useable bags and deposited used plastic bags in Smith's recycle bins eliminated 538,480 pounds of plastic from going into local landfills, according to a Kroger press release.

Del Taco has launched a new Santa Fe Chicken Soft Taco. It contains a new roasted corn and black bean salsa, as well as a sauce with a kick. It is priced at $1.49.

The TCBY Store Giveaway has chosen Garrick Hyde of South Jordan as a semifinalist who could become the owner of a TCBY store. From April 26-May 2, the public can vote for their favorite finalist at TCBY.com.
