What doesn't seem to be mentioned in all the immigration debate is why we are in this situation. I think the reason is the federal government takes forever to admit someone to be a citizen. If we would make work visas readily available for those we want to come here and work but who could go home when they want, that would solve much of the problem. We then need to have people we want here be able to get citizenship in a much more reasonable time (two to three years at the most). By granting higher points to more desirable immigrants but awarding some immigration to all groups (perhaps by awarding points to those on the waiting list the longest), we could resolve most of the problems.
