I am writing a short note encouraging people to not support the legislation Rep. Stephen Sandstrom is reported to be writing. Immigration law has a long history of racism. It has always been written to keep the unwanted out. My grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1929. I was fortunate that he was from Germany and "wanted." My wife has an ancestor who came to the United States from Italy but changed their last name to sound English, since Italians weren't really welcome.
We only really wanted Chinese to come when they worked on the railroad. We limited them as soon as that was completed. Immigration law reminds me of those who move to a nice neighborhood and then try to stop everybody else from doing the same. It smacks of elitism.
