PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The Players Championship was so benign that more than half the field broke par — even Tiger Woods.

Coming off the worst performance of his career, Woods survived a rugged start and made his only bogey on the final hole for a 2-under 70 in the opening round Thursday at the TPC Sawgrass.

J.B. Holmes played bogey-free in his round of 6-under 66 and was tied for the lead with Robert Allenby, who played in the afternoon when the wind began to swirl. They were a stroke ahead of eight players, including Lee Westwood.

KIM INJURED: Anthony Kim had surgery on his left thumb, which will keep him out of the U.S. Open and possibly the British Open this summer. Kim is expected to be out for 10-12 weeks.
