PROVO — BYU's student-designed race car recently cruised to a fourth-place finish in the annual Formula Hybrid Competition at Dartmouth.

The blue and white "Lithium Lightning," won fourth place overall, and second place for presentation and electric-only acceleration.

The annual competition, now in its fourth year, pits the fastest, sleekest student cars against each other via the clock.

The cars are judged on presentation, electric and unrestricted acceleration, autocross and an endurance race.

A team from Italy took home first place, with Texas A&M and the University of California-Davis in second and third, respectively.

BYU's second competitive race car, Lithium Lightning was a semesters-long capstone project by 13 engineering students who spent nearly 8,000 hours building the car from scratch.
