TOOELE — A Tooele man who pleaded guilty to shooting his wife multiple times, including once in the face, was sentenced to up to 20 years in prison Tuesday.
Jack Vangrimbergen Jr., 45, was sentenced to two to 20 years in the Utah State Prison for attempted murder and one to five years for committing an act of domestic violence in the presence of a child. The two terms are to be served consecutively. He was also ordered to pay $2,000 in fines and pay restitution to cover medical costs and therapy treatment.
Vangrimbergen shot his wife in front of the pair's 11-year-old daughter in September, leading to charges of attempted murder, a second-degree felony, and domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony. He pleaded guilty to both charges in December, and the attempted murder charge was reduced to a second-degree felony in exchange for the man's guilty plea.
Vangrimbergen's 39-year-old wife was wounded in the face, arm and leg on Sept. 24. The couple's daughter told a neighbor she initially thought the shooting was a prank but then realized what had actually happened and tried to call 911.
The girl told police her father yelled, "This is for cheating on me," before he fired the shots.
Vangrimbergen was heavily intoxicated and did not recall shooting his wife, according to court documents.
Vangrimbergen's wife filed for divorce shortly after the shooting.
