Lola Irene

Harper

1932 ~ 2010

The world lost a great person on June 7th, 2010. Lola lost her long battle with heart failure that began more than 20 years ago. She lived courageously, without complaint, until her heart could no longer do its job. So full of life and "with it" all the way to the end.Lola was born to Gladys and Walter "Griff" Douglas on June 13, 1932 in Salt Lake City, one of five children. She graduated from Granite High School in 1951. She met Robert Harper in Salt Lake City, and they married April 25, 1953. She worked 35 years for AT&T and retired in 1987. Together, they welcomed their only child, Spence, into their lives in 1968 and his wife, Kellie in 1988. Lola and Robert celebrated 57 years of marriage this year. Lola was a very active person and loved to golf. She enjoyed time spent with her friends and family. She spent many good years living in St. George during the winter months, returning to Salt Lake during the summer. Lola also enjoyed watching a good ball game on TV. Lola was a person you could count on, for anything. She would go out of her way to make you feel special when you needed it. She always represented the family for funerals, graduations, weddings, etc. because it was important to her to recognize people on their important day(s). Everyone was her friend because she was fun to be around and always helpful where she could be.

She is preceded in death by both parents and survived by her husband, Robert, who was tirelessly by her side through the many years of illness and nearly constantly at the end. Also survived by son, Spence (Kellie), and grandchildren, Douglas Robert, Catherine Grace, and Elizabeth Anne, as well as by her brothers (Walter, Merrill, and Wally) and sister (Donna Spanton).

The family would like to specifically thank Dr. Roger Freedman as well as the Intermountain Heart Failure Clinic for all of their excellent care through the years, and the staff at Intermountain Medical Center CICU for their patience and care at the end of her life. We had a lot of extra quality time with her because of all of their expertise and care.

Services will be held at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy (1950 E. 10600 S), Friday, June 11, 2010 at 2 p.m., where family and friends may call one hour prior to services. A gathering will follow immediately after services at Willow Creek Park, 8400 S. 2000 E. in Sandy. In case of inclement weather, the wake will be at the LDS Church, 1834 E. Creek Rd.
