SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the shooting death of another man has been sentenced to prison and ordered to pay a hefty restitution for the 2008 crime.
Richard Sean Craft, 22, was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison with credit for the 1 1/2 years he's already served and ordered to pay $47,000 in restitution to the family of Ryan Agar, 24. Craft was implicated in the Aug. 16, 2008, slaying and was charged, initially, with first-degree murder. As part of a plea bargain, he was allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter, a second-degree felony.
Agar was shot multiple times while standing in a driveway near 500 E. Elwood Place just after 3 a.m. Even after he was struck in the neck and lying on the ground bleeding, witnesses said a second attacker came up to him and punched him in the head and face, according to Salt Lake County Jail documents.
The two assailants ran away and were pursued by Agar's brother but he stopped when one of the men raised his weapon and threatened him.
Family members said at the time that Agar and Craft were acquaintances and neighbors. Craft had even been in Agar's house to help him hook up a stereo system.
Third District Judge Royal Hansen also ordered Craft to pay a fine of $1,040. Craft's attorneys objected to the $47,000 in restitution and have filed a motion requesting a hearing on the matter.
