CROSS-COUNTRY: Vice Principal/Athletics Director Jeff Reynolds today announced Maggie Chan-Roper has been named the new head boys' and girls' cross-country coach at American Leadership Academy in Spanish Fork.
A world-class athlete, Chan-Roper represented Hong Kong in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and also qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Coach Chan-Roper started competitive running in the eighth grade and went on become Hong Kong's most accomplished female distance runner, earning the title of "Distance Queen." To this day, she still holds eight National Records, including the 1,500 meters, 1 mile, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, the 10K road, the half marathon, and the marathon. Chan-Roper was named the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association Athlete of the Year from 1995 through 2004.
In 2009, Chan-Roper was inducted into the Brigham Young University Athletics Hall of Fame. In her four seasons of competition in cross-country and track at BYU, Coach Chan-Roper earned six different All-America citations, including three in cross-country, and three in track. She was also recognized as an Academic All-American in 1998 and was a BYU Scholar Athlete from 1995 through 1999.
