BLUFFDALE — A motorcyclist who hit a plastic trash can that got onto the freeway was flown to a local hospital in critical condition Tuesday after crashing.
About 12:45 p.m., a motorcycle rider on northbound I-15 near the Bluffdale exit hit the debris in the road. Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden said it appeared the man "wobbled" for 200 to 250 feet trying to keep his bike upright, before finally crashing. After hitting the pavement, the motorcycle continued for another 100 feet before hitting the cement median.
The motorcycle rider, whose name and age were not immediately available, was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital in critical condition, Roden said. He did not believe the man was wearing a helmet.
Northbound I-15 near Bluffdale was shut down for 20 to 25 minutes while emergency crews responded. It was unknown Tuesday if the trash can fell off the back of another vehicle or came from somewhere else.
